Braking of large ships tends to become insoluble problem; to stop supertankers of masses varying from 80,000 to 175,000 tons, enormous distance of brake-way (stop-way) has to be run through; this distance covers many miles and remedy is required; possible method of braking, and tests of it in towing tank of Technological University at Delft are reported; hydrodynamic brakes are supposed to consist of flaps moving laterally and to be hydraulically operated; flaps are placed at ship's forebody so that contour remains within contour of midship section; suggestions are given on fitting installations in new designs.
