Despite progressive improvements in hull form and ship's machinery, screw propeller has continued to be most efficient and economical propulsion device; yet in last decade economic factors have dictated changes in ship design which indicate that some deviation from past practices may be forthcoming; analysis is made of trends of these changes for cargo ships and tankers and their possible effect on selection of optimum propulsion device is shown.
