Two principal types of hovercraft so far built are peripheral air jet vehicles built by Westland and Vickers, fast amphibious craft and rigid-sidewall vessels, built by Denny, which are nonamphibious and slower and cheaper to build but have lower work capacity; operational features of amphibious hovercraft which can be driven ashore and berthed firmly against platform at deck level; craft may be berthed on submerged floor of floating pontoon, which is connected to shore with long hinged ramp and firmly restrained between piled dolphins.
