On basis of 50 replies to questionnaire considerable information has been accumulated and is presented here as concensus; preparatory work includes elimination or correction of drainage problems, renewal of switch and cross ties, unloading ballast, road crossing rehabilitation, and preparation for unloading at road crossing and bridges; rail length should be adjusted at "mean" temperature; continuous welded rail should be tailored in field; where possible eliminate all joints in continuous-welded-rail territory; newly laid rail should be surfaced and lined as soon as practicable.
