Paper examines how, and to what extent, experimental investigations may lead to determination of aerodynamic characteristics, performance and flying qualities of aircraft; comparisons between wind-tunnel and flight results in wide range of speeds extending from low speeds of V/STOL aircraft to hypersonic speeds of spacecraft at re-entry have been made; after situating flight corridors of typical airplanes and re-entry bodies (altitude, Reynolds number, Mach number, stagnation temperature), various ground testing facilities allowing more or less appropriate simulation of flight conditions are surveyed; it is concluded that ground test facilities contribute greatly to design and development of airplanes, spacecraft, and missiles.
