Success with which vehicle operators are able to use periscopic rear-viewing optical systems may depend upon extent to which optical scientists, who are designing such systems and automotive engineers and stylists with whom they are working, consider physiological and perceptual capabilities in performing driving task; factors considered are eye location, head movement, and perceptual capabilities of drivers' eyes; these factors are then related to periscopic design and engineering; emphasis is placed upon limited visual capabilities of driver over age of 50 who comprises over 28% of driving population in United States.
