Summary of several of approaches taken during past decade to improve rear vision and effectiveness of such systems; concept of periscopic rear vision through use of simple cylindrical optics and performance of such systems when evaluated within prototype motor vehicles are described; it is found that this type of optical arrangement offers best immediate answer to problem of improving visual performance in motor vehicles.
