United States Navy has adopted polystyrene foam shipping containers as replacements for nailed wooden crates for pyrotechnic ordnance; besides lower weight and volume, lower shipping cost, and generally lower material cost, advantages over wood include high shock absorption, easier and safer handling (no splinters), ready access to contents, fire resistance, container reusability, and ability to be molded in complex product-conforming configurations, thereby eliminating inner packing materials.
