Main hull and housing of "George M. Humphrey", largest Great Lakes freighter, were designed specifically by American Ship Building Co for automatic welding in subassemblies; these latter will be lifted into ship assembly by means of 50-ton capacity cranes; 120 ft of weld on heavier plates produced daily by two men; one of longest automatic welds ever made on ship was done on 1 1/2-in. thick plate port and starboard subassemblies.
