Performance of supersonic combustion ramjet is examined in relation to that of subsonic ramjet; at low hypersonic speeds internal performance of two cycles are comparable, but at speeds above Mach 7, supersonic combustion cycle should offer superior performance; beyond Mach 9 lack of reliable intake data makes estimation of possible engine performance conjectural; as acceleration engine supersonic combustion ramjet, flying at relatively low altitudes, offers possibilities unattainable with conventional ramjet; appraisal of available data on mixing and reaction rates is made to assess feasibility of supersonic combustion.
