Performance estimates for supersonic combustion ramjet (SCRJ) indicate that it should be capable of flying from Mach 5 to orbital speeds; it does, however, require boosting to initial speed near Mach 5; use of ballistic launcher of type used by McGill University High Altitude Research Project (HARP) at Barbados Island is found to be promising means of flight-testing hypersonic ramjets; performance of ramjet was calculated by 1-dimensional equations of motion for real gas in thermodynamic equilibrium, using tables of Mollier data for air and combustion products; IBM 1410 computer was used.
