Paper compares Rolls-Royce RB 162 16 to 1 thrust/weight ratio lift jet and its installation with range of Rolls-Royce lift fans derived from RB 162 using latter as gas generator; comparisons between basic engines reveal fan to have worse thrust/volume, thrust/weight and response rates; installation of these engines in lift pod is described showing equipment required for complete VTOL power-plant; comparison of installed weight breakdown for two types of pod is made; some of advantage of fans' lower fuel consumption is lost in longer takeoff transition time which accrues from higher momentum drag of lift fans and higher pod drag.
