A mixed-flow lift fan 6 for a hovercraft comprises an air intake 28, an air outlet and a plurality of blades 20 mounted on a shaft 26 for rotation to draw air through the inlet 28 and expel it through the outlet at a higher pressure. For each blade 20 the ratio of the trailing edge span of the blade to the average trailing edge swept diameter of the fan is in the range 0.35 to 0.45. The fan may have between seven and eleven blades. The ratio of the fan intake diameter to the average trailing edge swept diameter may be 0.80 to 1.10. A scroll-shaped fan casing may be provided to deliver the airstream through scroll casing outlet(s) at 90o to the axis of the fan. The top ring of the fan may be incorporated into the static intake (figs.2,3).
