Autorotating rotors can, in single configuration system, provide capability for retardation, stabilization, drag force modulation, glide at useful lift/drag ratios, maneuvering and control during descent, and low-velocity touchdown; rotor system was successfully deployed and operated in wind tunnel tests at speeds up to Mach 3.0; preliminary design studies for manned capsule system indicate that installed weight compares favorably with other maneuverable gliding recovery systems; if deployed at 100,000 ft, rotor will provide approximately 25-mi glide range.
