It is suggested one of most important factors in calculation of economic efficiency is size; operating costs depend on number of men in crew, fuel consumption and idle periods involved in loading and discharging cargo; costs per ton for crude oil transport decline with increasing tanker size; despite advantage of large tankers, depths of ports and water lanes severly restrict operational scope; design aspects discussed include study of forebody shape to prevent increased operating costs as result of increased speed, influence of shallow water, length of cargo tanks, longitudinal strength, corrosion, etc.
