It is believed that contracts reached vicinity of 7-million gross tons by end of Dec 1965, all-time high record for Japan; order book is characterized by advancement made by bulk carriers which surpassed tonnage of tankers although growth in size of tankers was outstanding as sizes of over 100,000 ton dw are no longer novelty; large and medium size shipyards were busy, but small yards suffered because of decrease in orders for small ships and fishing craft; it is intended to build 1.8 million gross tons under 1965 fiscal year, or 21st Shipbuilding Program; four of five yards capable of building largest ships began constructions in 1965; data tables are included.
