Development of hydrostatic diesel locomotive drive is described and structure, action and main calculating formulas are given; traction efficiency graphs, expenditures on construction and controls, brake effect and maintenance requirements are presented to show comparative advantages of hydrodynamic and hydrostatic transmissions; it is concluded that hydrostatic drive enables useful and economical transmission installations in smaller diesel locomotives, but that for great power performance Foettinger drive is necessary.
