Liability for ships running in following sea to behave in disconcerting manner under certain conditions is discussed; examples of marginal behavior leading to broaching from first-hand accounts as early as 1625 and ranging to warships; criteria and indices as related to qualities of directional stability and maneuverability such as are used to define these qualities numerically; ideas on use of autopilots; model results, with particular references to high speed craft.
