Under conditions simulating cathodic protection of ships' hulls, current densities near anodes at small areas of coating or dielectric shield failure will increase with decreasing holiday area and distance from anode; actual system may have considerable variation in current density with time as result of coating deterioration, ship velocity, calcareous films, water resistivity changes; present data point to need for designing ship cathodic portection systems so as to locate anodes on areas of ship hulls with minimum locked-in or anticipated external stresses.
