In surfacing or emergency recovery maneuver, safety of submarine is dependent upon structural integrity of its main ballast tanks; besides absorbing cyclic effects of routine blowing over life of ship, in casualty condition these tanks must sustain high and sudden air-blow pressures without rupturing; because of weight criticality, structure of these tanks must be efficiently designed; discussion considers nature and history underlying evolution of submarine ballast tanks, with reference to Submarine Safety Program stemming from loss of USS Thresher.
