Data were collected from coupled two-car units in light traffic with programmed lead-car maneuvers and in dense expressway traffic; intervehicular spacing and velocities and accelerations for each of cars were obtained; models of changes of variables with operating condition and with introduction of time delays in variables were investigated using computer simulation with empirical data; results are discussed in terms of generality of car-following models with respect to driving population, extent of coupling, and implications of lags in following-car performance for system stability.
