Most obvious health problem related to transport is accidents and their subsequent injuries and deaths; toll for 1966 was 113,563 deaths for all accidents, with 50 million injuries; indirect effects on man which must be considered such as noise, vibrations, inconvenience of most transportation systems, poor connections to and from airports, difficulty of transferring from bus to train, or slow and frustrating drive for commuter; high speeds will increase safety hazards, add to stresses and tensions; modification of old highways and rights-of-way may contribute to further displacement of people; need for planning that recognizes broader goals in context of entire system of life is stressed.
