Intelligent Transport Systems are the use of advanced sensors, communication technologies and management approaches in a unified way to offer innovative services for managing traffic and various kinds of transportation. It encourages customers to use transportation networks more intelligently, safely, and efficiently. Utilizing the vehicle data gathered, ITS systems standardize the deployment of frameworks while increasing traffic safety and passenger satisfaction. VANETs are a significant part of Intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Sometimes, they are cited as Intelligent Transportation Networks. These networks are applied in real-time scenarios, where vehicles disseminate with each other and the significant unit with the help of nearby road units (RSU) and corresponding onboard units (OBUs). However, due to their infrastructure, these VANETs experience some security challenges. As a result, academics have launched numerous research works to identify and look into the security concerns surrounding ITS, connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV), and vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). This survey paper includes the study of various attacks in these networks, and the applications of Security techniques to improve ITS in terms of throughput, efficiency, and defending them from attacks.
