Formerly two main passenger tracks of New York Central at South Bend, Ind, station required excessive amount of maintenance to keep them in satisfactory condition; track maintenance substantially reduced as result of measures applied in Sept 1945, which included installation of asphalt-coated ballast, laying of continuous butt-welded rails and provision of drainage system for disposing of surface water.
