Focal point of Japanese shipbuilding in 1963 was inflow of enormous volume of fresh orders for export ships, in particular for large size tankers; Japanese Ministry of Transportation authorized construction totaling 3,657,000 gross tons of steel ships of 1000 gross tons and above during period Jan 1- Oct 31 1963, of which 86% are for export; if about million gross tons of export ships for which contracts had already been signed, or construction permits applied for are included, 1963 record for export ships would probably be about 4,500,000 gross tons; tables show breakdown for new contracts, launchings, and completions, contracts for tankers of 80,000 to 125,000 tons dw, etc.
