It is assumed component of ship's velocity in direction of wave propagation is equal to wave celerity; linearized equations of motion of ships in smooth water are used, extended with terms considering exciting forces due to waves; ship is assumed to be symmetrical and to have vertical frames at waterline; attention is paid to influence on maneuverability of heading, wave length, wave height and application of autopilot; linear treatment shows clearly difficulties connected with navigation in following seas with low frequencies of encounter.
