Axial vibration caused by radial forces acting on each crank and by periodic thrust of propeller was studied in shafting of cargo vessel of 12,600 gross tons propelled by 12-cyl 2-stroke diesel engine of 18,000 hp, built in Scottish shipyard; fourth-order resonance of axial vibration was reduced by about two-thirds by opposing excitation from propeller to that from diesel engine; rotation of propeller relative to engine through angle was fixed to accuracy of few degrees.
