Factors affecting truck requirements; truck engines are more prone to high speed knock which cannot be heard due to masking effect of high level of vehicle noise on road; details of chassis dynamometer technique developed to overcome noise barrier and thus provide realistic octane requirement data which were used to construct " octane requirement map"; map is also used to describe new concept in determining relative engine severity.
