Present automatic flight control system (AFCS) technology centers about fixed, scheduled, and self-adaptive control designs; description of basic elements of self-adaptive flight control system which is combination of AFCS and self-adaptive control system, or SAC S, that is tied into other to control its dynamic performance; basic elements of SACS; most successful system to date is Honeywell high-gain design flying on X-15 research aircraft since 1962; four categories of self-adaptive techniques, namely, high gain, steepest descent, perturbation, and flexible vehicles; principles, problem areas, and present status of these four approaches.
