Details of runway at NASA Langley Research Center test track for hydroplaning research under controlled conditions of fluid depth and pavement surface texture; smooth-tread 6.50 - 13 passenger car tire was instrumented so that hydrodynamic pressures developed on its tread surface in tire-ground contact zone could be measured; results show that hydroplaning is affected by fluid depth, pavement surface texture, and tread design; effects of tire hydroplaning on vehicle operation and recommendations made; use of air jets to remove fluid from pavement in front of tires is considered.
