Investigation by photoelastic means indicates that radial pressure between two force-fitted and polished cylindrical bodies is not materially affected by presence or absence of thin film between contacting surfaces; clean and well-polished mating surfaces are important for all fits subjected to heavy loads producing motion between parts occurring in large crankshafts, etc. (see also Engineering v 137 n 3561 Apr 13 1934 p 439-41)
