IN many instances of machine design it is expedient to retain a bush within a body by interference alone. Under certain circumstances the stresses may be excessively high, or conversely the initial shrinkage may be insufficient to restrain the bush in the body at high operating temperatures. It thus becomes necessary to investigate these effects from a design viewpoint, and it is the object of this article to present a relatively quick method for solving the equations involved. In addition it is often necessary to determine deflexions of the bore of the inserted bush, and occasionally the growth of the outside of the body. Expressions are also developed in the following analysis for the determination of these.
