Latest move is to lower carbon and get superior hardness and toughness from chromium alloy; drop tests as well as tests under service conditions of rails laid on 3° curve on main track of Boston and Maine Railroad; show that chromium rail steel is considerably superior to steel in present use; suggested composition is carbon 0.25 to 0.32%, manganese 0.50 to 0.75%, phosphorus 0.04% maximum, silicon 0.25 to 0.40%, and chromium 2.80 to 3.20%.
