High-manganese and Bessemer steel rails also defended by metallurgists at meeting of Brit. Iron and Steel Inst.; low alloy gives prolonged life under heavy traffic; it was found that chromium-steel rails as rolled were capable of being drilled without difficulty and would not air-harden after heating for bending; higher carbon reduces impact resistance; manganese in carbon steel could safely go to 1 per cent.
