It is essential to appreciate how seaworthiness depends upon freeboard; author distinguishes three distinct aspects of this dependence; (1) that freeboard in association with watertight subdivision ensures floatability of damaged vessel; (2) freeboard governs stability of inclined vessel; (3) by supplying reserve buoyance and adequate platform, freeboard insures working and habitability of vessel despite oncoming seas.
