Types of vehicle available for transport of passengers over water are examined and compared with hovercraft and its future prospects; particular aspect of sea-keeping capability, especially from point of view of passenger, is problem of heave in seaway, starting with problem of traveling over short waves where waves are only fraction of craft length; performance which can be expected and operating costs which are related to first cost and various direct costs, of which two most important are maintenance costs and fuel costs.
