Development of design and fabrication procedures required to replace existing aluminum section of wing structure with part made of boron-epoxy; wing box extension was selected as component because it incorporates many of problems associated with aircraft structures such as access covers, control surface mountings, contoured surfaces, and fuel pressurization including variety of loads and environmental conditions involved; although existing aluminum design is unpressurized, demonstration component has been designed to include pressurized cell to demonstrate feasibility of building integral fuel tank; test data and specimens, design philosophy used, and specific weight-strength comparisons with typical aircraft materials are presented.
