Heavy-haul freight transportation has developed rapidly in China. However, with the increase of the train load and the length of the train formation, the longitudinal impact and load exerted by the carriage body and coupler buffer device increase sharply. In severe cases, this can lead to coupler breakage or decoupling. This study focuses on the middle locomotive of a 20,000-ton heavy-haul combined train. The dynamic model of the coupler buffer device, vehicle, and the entire train is established. By varying the number of wagons ahead of and following the middle locomotive and incorporating a controllable end-of-train device into the train, the impact on indicators, including the coupler force and the coupler’s lateral yaw angle at the middle locomotive, is investigated. The results indicate that as the number of rear wagons is reduced and controllable end-of-train devices are deployed, the coupler force and the coupler’s lateral yaw angle at the middle locomotive decrease significantly, which holds significant implications for enhancing the operational safety of heavy-haul trains.
