Rolling contact fatigue has been an important factor that affects and restricts the wheel–rail service life and transportation safety and one of the major failure forms of the wheel–rail contact. Analysis of elastic–plastic stress and strain in rolling contact is the key work to study the fatigue failure of wheel–rail rolling contact. With finite element analysis software ANSYS, a three-dimensional elastic–plastic finite element model for wheel–rail rolling contact was established, where nonlinear isotropic/kinematic hardening model was applied to the constitutive relation of materials. The residual stress and the residual strain on the rail were obtained by repeated application of the moving normal load and tangential load on the wheel contact surface to simulate wheel–rail rolling contact process. The results showed that, along with the increasing in the number of wheels rolling, the rail Von Mises stress was gradually increasing and got stable after rolling 10 times; the residual strain also increased but the increasing rate gradually attenuated. When the lateral displacement of the wheelset was set from 0 to 9.18 mm, the increase of the lateral displacement of the wheelset led to decrease of the rail Von Mises; the increase of the friction coefficient between wheel and rail led to the increase of the rail Von Mises stress, but the influence was minor.
