For most braking systems, the transfer of the braking forces is achieved via the wheel-rail contact, making knowledge of wheel-rail contact as well as adhesion characteristics and third bodies vital for the design of brake systems. In the present chapter, the wheel-rail contact according to Hertzian theory as well as the resulting adhesion characteristics are reviewed. Special attention is put on third bodies, most notable water, leaves and sand.
