This paper aims at analyzing traveler behavior characteristics and travel demands in urban agglomerations based on segmentation-based travel purposes. A total of 1,488 valid questionnaires obtained from a survey in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration are used in this study. Data show that the main travel purposes include tourism travel, business travel, and personal visiting travel, but commuting travelers are very few. For tourism travel, the annual travel frequency is relatively low, and travelling by buses is their first choice. Car and ordinary train also account for a high proportion. The annual business travel frequency is relatively high. The major means of intercity transportation is high-speed rail. Business travelers prefer to take a taxi as access travel. Besides, punctuality and convenience for working and returning on the same day are highly required. For personal visiting travel, accessibility is most important; so, the predominant transportation mode is an intercity bus.
