When Japan's Tokaido Shinkansen was placed into service in 1964, transportation that surpassed existing common knowledge was born. Along with greatly shifting the mutual shares of passengers carried by existing means of transportation, the Shinkansen also dramatically altered the lifestyle patterns of ordinary citizens. Using the experience it has accumulated, Japan collaborated with Chinese researchers who are familiar with actual conditions in the People's Republic of China to produce demand forecast for China's Beijing — Shanghai high-speed railway. Researchers created the forecast using the MD Model that used for railways currently under construction in Japan, such as the Seibi Shinkansen. A summary of these forecast is reported below.
