As a form of expressway direction information, there are no complete rules for urban expressway exit numbering in China. In addition, the national standards do not list rules for the marshaling method of urban expressway exit numbering. Referring to relevant rules stated in the national standard, "Road Traffic Signs and Markings", as well as comparing and analyzing the current situation of expressway exit numbering in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, this research proposes marshaling rules of expressway exit numbering on the basis of the demand for directional sign informationization, current expressway types in China, and construction scale in different cities. The goal of this study is to provide drivers with the only and correct exit information to help them identify and confirm the exit position of their destination in the shortest time, allowing them to exit the expressway safely and smoothly.
