Laser Diode pumped solid state lasers are now the most coherent laser source available with linewidths less than 1 Hz. The recent demonstration of cw amplification in LD pumped Nd:YAG opens the possibility of preserving coherence while extending power levels from tens of watts to kilowatts over the next five years. Continued improvements in power, efficiency, reliability at lower cost will open future space based applications such as laser communications, laser based precision ranging, laser remote sensing, and laser atmospheric wind sensing
