NASA is embarking on a new era of laser remote sensing instruments from space. This paper focus’ specifically on the laser technology involved in two present NASA missions. The first is a current mission, the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter and the second is the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System scheduled to launch in 2001. The laser transmitters in these space-based remote sensing instruments are discussed in the context of requirements of these two missions.
