The propulsion test setup and procedure should follow the guidelines of the International Towing Tank Conference. The difference in loading condition is compensated in the propulsion test by applying an additional towing force. It corrects the otherwise excessive loading of the model propeller during the propulsion test. From the results of the propulsion test and from the open water test of the stock propeller one has to determine the operating condition of the propeller behind the ship model, the self propulsion point. In the continental method, a single pre‐calculated skin friction correction force is employed to ensure a propeller loading which is dynamically similar to the loading of the full scale propeller. Alternatively, propulsion tests may be repeated at a specific speed each time varying pulling forces which replaces the skin friction correction force. This varies the propeller loading and is also known as a load variation test or for short the British method.
