In view of the excellent mechanical properties of continuous fiber reinforced plastics (FRPs), this chapter concentrates on these materials and their use in automotive structural parts. Conventional methods for the product engineering of composite structures are based on a step by step procedure with work phases and milestones. Lightweight design is a holistic approach towards minimizing the weight of a structure while its overall performance remains the same or is even improved. The chapter focuses on the mechanical properties and especially on the crashworthiness of automotive structural components since, in many cases, it is the mechanical properties that dictate the specific design of the components. The wide range of influencing factors and their interdependencies, which results in an as yet unknown complexity, calls for a new methodology for the product engineering of hybrid lightweight structures.
