This chapter focuses on the characteristics of the basic laser hazards that need to be understood for safe use of lasers, and describes their application in materials processing. There are two principal forms of hazard associated with lasers: radiation‐related hazards, and nonbeam hazards. The classification of a laser is based primarily on the ability of the main or reflected beam to cause injury to the eye or skin, and that depends on the level of accessible emission for that laser. The chapter outlines some of the major steps that need to be taken to prevent or at least minimize the occurrence of laser accidents. A Laser Safety Officer is someone who is given the responsibility and authority for ensuring safety in connection with the laser system. Another effective means of preventing accidents involves the use of warning signs and labels on the lasers.
