The early history of unmanned aerial system began with balloon and kite systems in the late 1800s and progressed through early unmanned aircraft in World War I through a number of unmanned aerial systems developed and used during World War II as weapons. Systems that were recognizable early versions of what are now called UAVs appeared in the 1980s. A complete UAV system has a number of major sub‐systems that form the basis for the general organization of this book and are described in a generic manner in this chapter.
