This chapter explores physical (PHY) layer specifications and media access (MAC) sublayer protocols of AeroMACS networks. It discusses the AeroMACS MAC layer. In particular, scheduling, Quality of service (QoS), Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) system, and Handover (HO) procedure are described in some detail. AeroMACS network architecture and network reference model (NRM) are also discussed. The chapter highlights the position and the role of the AeroMACS network within the larger contexts of the airport network and the global Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN). An airport network may be viewed as a subnet of the greater ATN, and AeroMACS may be considered as an access network for the airport network to connect to ATN. The key role of an AeroMACS network, within the greater airport network, is essentially providing seamless connectivity for the aircraft, while on the surface of the airport, to enable access to all services available in the airport network.
